FAQs

Regarding Adoption:

What is the adoption price of a dog/puppy, cat/kitten from the shelter?
Puppies $150; Dogs $125; Cats & kittens $60 – includes spay/neuter, rabies, distemper, bordatella, vaccines.

What should I know before adopting?
That shelter animals, much like all animals need your patience in learning what you want them to learn. Many have had no training or time spent with them by previous owners and they need to feel like they won’t be left AGAIN. Animals take time and patience to meld them into your household with praise and encouragement. Sadly, some of them have already been in multiple homes, or lived their lives outside.

How do I know the personality of a dog or cat?
Ask one of our volunteers who work with them daily. They will tell you all they know about this dog or cat (probably more than you asked for). They usually have a pretty good feel for the temperament but as said earlier, these cats and dogs are in a stressful situation in cages.

What about spay and neutering?
Taken care of before adopting.

Regarding Volunteering & Membership:

I’d like to help at the shelter. What kinds of things can I do?
Walking dogs is a huge job that we try to do a couple times a day. Sign a waiver at the front desk, wear old clothes, change before you go inside your home (although animals are inoculated, we’d like to err on the safe side), let a volunteer help you get a dog out of his/her cage and leash it, and walk to your heart’s content. Only rules are: clean up after the dog (bags are at the entry of the fenced area) and spray down the area with a disinfectant, keep dog under control and away from other dogs. Cleaning cages (dog and cat) and snuggling cats are other jobs we can always use help with.

Do I need to be a member of HSOMC to help at the shelter?
No. We welcome the public to come out and assist us in making a better life for the animals – they deserve it.

What kinds of things should I know when helping at the shelter?
That many of the animals are stressed in this environment and can exhibit behaviors they don’t necessarily exhibit under other conditions. Be careful and move slowly in your approach. Let them smell your hand through the cage bars and if you’re in doubt, get a volunteer.

How do I become a member of HSOMC?
Paperwork is on the front desk and the staff at the front desk will take your membership fees. The fees are listed on the form. If you prefer, the form can be found here and mailed to the P. O. Box address.

How can I foster an animal for the Humane Society?
Ask any volunteer who the foster coordinators are and you won’t have to look for them – they’ll be looking for you. A home check and vet check is required. Most fosters are requested to go to Petsmart on Saturdays to show their animals and increase adoption opportunities. Petsmart’s adoptathons are Saturdays from 10 to 4 for our group.

What happened to the gas chamber?
We are pleased to say it is in pieces, never to be used again.
