Foster Care

The Humane Society of Midland County always welcomes more foster care volunteers to our team. Foster providers give temporary care for kittens, puppies, cats and dogs that come from our shelter. Some animals only need a home for a short while, others may need longer. By offering your time, energy, and home to an animal in need, you prepare the animal for adoption into a permanent, loving home.

The more foster care providers we have, the more lives that can be saved!

FAQ About Foster Care

Why are foster homes needed?
The HSOMC foster program needs foster homes to provide a place for animals that need some extra care before adoption. This helps us maximize the number of animals we are able to save. Foster homes allow us to care for pets that would be difficult to care for in the shelter due to age, health or injury.

How do I apply to become a pet foster parent?

If you are interested in opening your heart and home to a pet in need please fill out a foster application. Foster applications can be filled out online, in the shelter or can be printed out online and turned into the shelter.

What types of pets need to be fostered?

-Orphaned puppies and kittens that require bottle feeding every 2-4 hours

-Kittens and puppies with moms (until 8 weeks of age and 2 lbs.)

-Animals recovering from treatable illnesses

-Underweight animals

-Animals in need of minor behavior modification and/or socialization

What is required to be a foster parent?

Foster parents must be at least 18 years of age. You may be a home owner or renter but if you rent we must speak with your landlord. If there are any fees associated with the pet being in your rental you would be responsible for that. A veterinary reference showing that your current pets are up to date on vaccines, tests, monthly preventatives, and are spayed or neutered is also required. You must be able to isolate the foster pet(s) from your family pets for an initial 10-day period. You must also be a member of the Humane Society of Midland County. Membership fees are waived for foster caregivers and membership applications can be filled out when you come to get your first foster. Once we have gone over the foster application and ensured your personal pets are vetted and you are allowed to have pets where you live you will be contacted by the foster coordinator.

What does the HSOMC provide for the care of foster pets?
Medical care is provided by the shelter. Both dogs and cats will have age appropriate vaccines, parasite control, and tests. The shelter can also provide food and litter, which would be picked up from the shelter if needed.  The Foster Coordinator will be available to answer questions and guidance throughout the fostering experience.

What will my duties be as a foster parent?

You will be expected to provide a loving, safe environment for the foster animals. We ask that you socialize and spend time with the pets on a daily basis. The animals will need to be brought to the shelter for vaccines and vetting as needed. On occasion you will need to transport your foster pet to the vet if there is a health issue or injury. This would be something scheduled by the shelter. If the foster pet is taken to the vet without prior approval from the shelter the cost would not be covered. You will be asked to send in photos and animal biographies towards the end of their stay with you. If you are unable to get photos we can assist you with that as we have a group of volunteer photographers. Finally you would need to have love to share a pet

How long would I the foster pet stay with me?

The length of time a pet will stay in a foster home is dependent of the reason they are in foster care. Typically pets stay in a foster home for 2-12 weeks.

How long until I am able to get started in the foster program?
The time table varies. The HSOMC foster coordinator and/or shelter director will contact you when a pet is in need of foster care. Foster families will be matched up with suitable foster pets for best results. You are never under any obligation to take any animal to foster. Pets in need of foster care include un-weaned puppies and kittens, moms and litters, injured and ill animals, and pets which are not doing well in the shelter environment.

When is the greatest need for foster homes?

The spring and summer are our busiest times of the year. We see loads of litters of kittens, both orphaned and with moms, that need a quiet and safe place to grow and thrive before they are ready for adoption. We do have a year round need for foster homes, however.

What if I fall in love with my foster pet?

We understand this completely! If you fall in love with your foster you absolutely may adopt them as long as the pet doesn’t have an adoption pending. Many of our foster families adopt their foster pets.
